Jim Barger: Co-Author “Jimmy Carter: Rivers and Dreams”

In one of the most fascinating and interesting episodes of The Storied Outdoors, we had the privilege of sitting down with Jim Barger Jr., a nationally recognized trial lawyer, accomplished author, and passionate environmental advocate whose life is deeply intertwined with storytelling, the natural world, and faith.

Who Is Jim Barger Jr.?

A native of St. Simons Island, Georgia, Jim’s story begins on the southern coast and winds through law school classrooms, boardrooms, and back to the salt marshes of his youth. With degrees in English and Philosophy from Furman University and a Master’s in Southern Studies from Ole Miss, his intellectual grounding is as deep as his love for the land.

He currently teaches white-collar investigations at the University of Alabama School of Law and sits on the boards of both the St. Simons Land Trust and One Hundred Miles, working to protect Georgia’s cherished coastline.

A Life Anchored in Faith and the Outdoors

Jim’s early memories are filled with time outside, instilled by his parents who always prioritized time in nature. This foundation has stayed with him, becoming a cornerstone of how he raises his own sons—with an emphasis on what he calls a “net-positive lifestyle.”

When asked what he hopes to instill in his children, Jim beautifully reflects on living with two loves in his heart: “A love for Jesus, and a love for whoever is standing right in front of me.”

It’s this principle that guides much of Jim’s life, from his environmental work to his writing and personal relationships.

Rivers & Dreams: A Literary and Spiritual Journey

Jim is the co-author of Jimmy Carter: Rivers & Dreams, a stunning book that explores the lesser-known side of President Carter’s life—his passion for fly fishing and the outdoors.

The project came to life through community connections and a collaborative spirit, including the work of an optometrist turned co-author. It’s a reflection not only of Carter’s legacy but also of the power of storytelling and place to shape who we are.

Jim shares how the writing process of Jimmy Carter: Rivers & Dreams offered personal transformation as well. “It encouraged me to do the things I can, and not get worked up about the things I can’t.”
