Tacos and The Gathering of Wild Dogs

The sun looks down on nothing half so good as a household laughing together over a meal.
— C.S. Lewis The Weight of Glory

In this essay, Dr. Gill recalls a time when he heard a pack of coyotes howling in the woods while hunting. That haunting memory caused him to reflect on the reason behind the call of the wild dogs at night and how they’re drawn to community. This need for community is present in all of our lives and for Bryan, it has been found around the dinner table, in a river, and with likeminded creatives. We hope you enjoy this reflection and are encouraged to reflect on your own communities.

We’re scared of close connection because close connection means pain.
— Larry Crabb The Battle: Entering Stories of the Soul,

The Call of the Wild, by Jack London. He writes, “Night came on, and a full moon rose high over the trees into the sky, lighting the land till it lay bathed in ghostly day. And with the coming of the night, brooding and mourning by the pool, Buck became alive to a stirring of the new life in the forest… He stood up, listening and scenting. From far away drifted a faint, sharp yelp, followed by a chorus of similar yelps. As the moments passed, the yelps grew closer and louder… He walked to the center of the open space and listened. It was the call, the many-noted call, sounding more luringly and compelling than ever before. And as never before, he was ready to obey.”
